To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Having a problem programming Kenwood TK-3140-3 radio. I have the kpg74d software. I get "check connection" message. Have cleaned and checked connectrions and used connections to program a TK-380 radio with its software. I have changed ports and assured that the baud rate is 57600. The TK-3140 I have is programmed and is a used radio. Can anyone give me a suggestion for what I might do? Do I need a programming cable that is different from the one I use to program a TK-380? Could this TK-3140 be locked somehow?
Thanks for your help.

KPG-74D is the correct software for the radio. KPG-36 is the correct programming cable.

The "PC Mode" cannot be locked. If you have a good connection to the radio, turn the radio on and try and talk to it from the software, if it doesn't answer, make sure you are using the correct Comm port. If that is correct:

Double check that the radio is a "K" model. Also, make sure that the activation key you used for the KPG-74D starts with 074K44.
If it's not a "K" model radio or you are using software that does not use an activation key that starts with 074K44, then you'll have issues.

If that doesn't fix it, suspect the flex connection inside the radio or some other form of damage. With used radios, you never know what someone else did to them.

Thank you, M. That is helpful. The software and laptop I am using was used by another person to program a TK-3140. So I think the software and software key are ok. The programming cable and laptop have been used with other software to program TK-380s. This 3140 is labeled "Kenwood TK-3140" and there is a "-3" below that. There are two serial numbers, in black 40300673 and beneath that in red 10737974 and it is labeled "made in Singapore." According to channel labels, it is programmed for use on the University of Akron campus. Does any of that suggest anything?

Does the radio model number have a -K on it?

And are you 100% sure the software was activated with the 074K44—— activation key?

If both of those are true, then there's something else going on. Try reading your '380 and confirm the PC/Cable are still good.
If that works, then start troubleshooting the software, make sure the correct comm port is selected.

If none of that works, time to start suspecting the radio of being the issue. Used radios off e-Bay are not immune to failures.

So, the TK-3140K3 is a 400 to 430 radio.
The 3140K is a 450-470 radio (which is most likely what your holding)
The -3 maybe the version, but I don't have any records on those as I phased out 300 units of those 5 years ago.
They are also END OF LIFE
Instead of wasting time with it, I would opt to look into a 1000 series radio or the 3000 series.
But as MMK says, might be an internal, but the other issue not mentioned, you say channel shows UofAkron,
that radio will be either LTR or Passport (KPG-64DK) if the radio has Passport Firmware.
You might be able to do a firmware version of it and post back your finding.
