• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi Can anyone tell me if Kenwood is going to come out with a firmware upgrade so that the 3170 portable can do MDC1200 without having to add the option board?

Thanks,

According to my Kenonwood dealer it isn't currently available. I called Kenwood a few months ago and they indicated that it wasn't on their agenda...too bad if you ask me.

Definitely too bad... There is an option board available for the 3170 to add the MDC option, but its to the tune of about $130 if I remember correctly.

Kenwood is loosing out

Our local Kenwood dealer lost out on a big bid against Icom due to lack of MDC1200 on the NX seriers radios. The bid was for a mixed mode FDMA and analog system.

I have a TK-3170 that was improperly written with the European (E) version firmware instead of the American (K) version. In order to re-write the firmware to the American (K) version the radio must first be programmed with the KPG-101D software, with the option to re-write firmware ENABLED. I have 4 different versions of KPG-101D and no matter what I do I cannot get the KPG-101D software to allow me to change the “Radio Model” from a TK-3170(K) to a TK-3170(E) model. In fact none of the (E) options are even listed.

Even though everything I read about the KPG-101D indicates that it will program all versions (E, K & M) of the TK-3170, none of my software will allow me to start building frequency a database as a TK-3170(E).

Anyone with knowledge on how to get the TK-101D to allow me to switch the “Radio Model” to (E) version would be greatly appreciated. Once I do this, I will be able to re-write the firmware to change it back to the American (K) version.

Thanks,
Matt
