To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:
Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Got a USB cable off Ebay and works fine. I think it was around $25. I have Serial cable, but would write to the radios, but not read them now that computers don't have Serial ports. The Serial cable didn't play nice with the USB adapter. Just search for a KPG-36 on Ebay and this will get you the correct cable.

You can get one for about $15 shipped on ebay. Get a serial one, not a usb one.
Code3cowboy maybe for your application the serial works well, but for me the best one is the USB KPG-36 cable. Not going to retype my reasons, since all can read in above post. I don't have have any problems programming my two TK-290 or one TK-280 with this cable. I don't feel the serial cables are bad, but just have to find a USB to serial converter cable that works well with it. Wasn't able to do that here, so starting using the USB cable with no regrets. One the record I also use a USB programming cable on my TK-780.
some times the USB cables wont work because of the software being DOS based. I think that is the point he is trying to make. i have both usb and serial cables and have had problems across all makes and models of radios with that

Congratulations! I plug my cables into the serial port on any of my computers as the usb-serial does not work for many radios, and absolutely does not work for Motorolas. Statistically speaking it would appear as though I am more likely to experience the problems than you, but it is easier to recommend serial cables as he may be working with a desktop, or may have a serial port on his laptop, or may run into the usb-radio issues many people experience.
Bought my USB cable and drivers off of ebay from Kawarad. It reads and writes with no problems on Windows Vista.

only solved, if someone buys them, lol
they work good, just I don't have the cord or software
I bought the radios and they work great. I bought a USB cable, but I should have gotten the serial cable as the software is DOS based. The cable did not come with any drivers, so searching for them was a pain. Once I got the correct driver, I was able to convert the USB to COM 2. Now the radios read/write perfectly in Win XP.

Also, just FYI, every USB programming cable I have used so far uses the FTDI USB to Serial converter driver or the Prolific USB to Serial converter drivers.

Yep, that's the one. After sifting through numerous sites that only wanted me to download junk to find that driver, I was finally able to locate one. The cable works great.
