To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have a Kenwood TK-760G-1 stuck in bootloader mode showing checksum 8FFF. I accidentally corrupted it with a custom beta file and urgently need a copy of the official factory G1-1000.hex or G1-2000.hex file to clear the error.

I don't know. I have radio checksum with 8FFF.
I have a radio, but I don't know how to help. Perhaps you could do some research to see what you require to get your radio working again. To get you started, here's what Google AI has to say...

There are no verified, official .hex firmware or codeplug files designated specifically as G1-1000 for the Kenwood TK-760G-1 VHF mobile radio. [1, 2]
If you are trying to program or update your radio, you should use the methods and resources detailed below:

1. Programming and Software
The TK-760G series radios use standard Kenwood .dat or .img files loaded via the Kenwood KPG-56D Programming Software. [1, 2]

  • Cable Needed: You will need an FTDI USB-to-RJ45/6-pin Kenwood Programming Cable.
  • File Types: When you save configurations in the official software, it generates .dat or .img files, rather than .hex. [1]

2. Firmware Updates
Official Kenwood firmware updates for legacy models are typically loaded using the DOS-based or Windows-based Fpro application, and the resulting extracted firmware files are rarely distributed in .hex format in the public domain. [1]

3. Hex Editing for Out-of-Band Frequencies
If you are looking for a modified .hex or .dat file, you are likely looking to force the radio to operate on frequencies outside its designed band split (such as moving a commercial 148-174 MHz radio into the 2m 144-148 MHz Ham band). [1]

  • Modifying Kenwood software or codeplugs to achieve out-of-band operation requires Hex Editing the executable itself.
  • For detailed hex edits and modifications (such as enabling 1200-9600 baud packet service), review the Ohio Packet Guide for Kenwood Radios. [1, 2]
For radio archives, codeplugs, and user manuals, consult the Repeater Builder Kenwood Resources. [1]

I don't know. I have radio checksum with 8FFF.
Here is some more info from Google AI...

The exact phrase "checksum 8fff" on a Kenwood TK-760G indicates a data error (EEPROM/firmware mismatch) or a read-fail event, commonly resolved by performing a factory reset and reprogramming using KPG-D1N or legacy KPG-49D / KPG-56D software. [1, 2, 3]

Factory Reset & Clearing
The TK-760G does not have a simple button combo for a hard reset. To resolve a checksum error, you must clear the radio using the computer interface:

  1. Turn off your TK-760G and connect a KPG-46 programming cable from your PC to the radio's microphone port.
  2. Open the corresponding Kenwood KPG software.
  3. Go to the Program menu and select Data Clear (or Initialize depending on the KPG version). This will clear the corrupted EEPROM memory. [1, 2, 3]
Reprogramming
Once cleared, the radio will require a fresh codeplug (programming file) to be written to it:

  1. Open a valid model-specific codeplug in your Kenwood KPG software.
  2. Go to Program > Write Data to Radio to upload a fresh, uncorrupted configuration.
  3. Once the write operation finishes, turn the radio off and back on to complete the cycle.

I need firmware file for checksum 8FFF. Because my radio is in firmware update mode. After restart it continuously goes in that mode. So I want to write firmware file to radio. If any one have the firmware file please share.

I found this file from a Google search. It appears that this one firmware file might apply to several Kenwood models. I can't vouch for the file being correct for the TK-760, but that was the context where I found it. You can unzip the attached folder and take a look.

Still got ERROR after completing. Please share firmware file with checksum 8FFF.

Firmware 8FFF is incorrect. It is a bogus checksum due to corruption and is causing your error condition. Last firmware version is 24B3.

No. It's Asian DTMF model
I see. Do you still remember what the original checksum of your radio was?
Or, what software did you use to reliably program your radio? KPG-56D or KPG-67D?

It has checksum 8FFF and we use KPG-56D software.

I don't think I have ever seen firmware with 8FFF checksum mentioned anywhere. But what do I know..
Do you have any KPG-56D codeplug from the times before you damaged your radio? If so, post it here. It might help to determine what kind of TK-760G you have.

Still got ERROR after completing. Please share firmware file with checksum 8FFF.

As has been noted previously (more than once), it appears that the checksum 8FFF does not designate a firmware file that you need to locate. Rather, it is an ERROR code. Please read what Google AI says about your situation.

The following Google instructions appear to be for a data-to-firmware mismatch. If you accidentally corrupted the original radio firmware, you'll need to locate an appropriate firmware file and first load it to your radio (using the appropriate firmware loading procedure), and then load a known-good codeplug to the radio (if necessary).

From Google:
A checksum 8FFF error on a Kenwood TK-760G indicates a corrupted EEPROM or a firmware-to-data mismatch. It is not a standard feature; it is an error code that prevents the radio from functioning normally until the memory is cleared and fresh codeplug data is written to it. [1]

Required Tools
  • Programming Cable: KPG-46 (or compatible aftermarket) interface cable.
  • Software: Legacy Kenwood programming software (such as KPG-49D or KPG-56D) running on a compatible Windows PC. [1]

Step-by-Step Recovery Process
Because the radio cannot self-correct this data error internally, you must perform a data initialization via the computer:
  1. Connect the Radio: Turn the TK-760G off. Connect the KPG-46 programming cable from your PC to the radio’s front panel microphone jack.
  2. Launch Software: Open your Kenwood KPG programming software on your computer.
  3. Data Clear: Turn the radio on. In the software, navigate to the Program menu and select Data Clear (this may be labeled as Initialize depending on the software version). This will wipe the corrupted EEPROM memory.
  4. Write New Codeplug: Once cleared, open a known-good, model-specific codeplug (configuration file) within the software.
  5. Upload: Go to Program > Write Data to Radio. Wait for the upload to complete, then power the radio off and back on.

I wish people would stop quoting what Google's AI tells them. Especially when it comes to all things technical.

@chief21, what you wrote above in 'Step-by-Step Recovery Process' is a nonsense. There is no 'Data Clear' or 'Initialize' in KPG-65D 'Program' menu.

Thank you. Only fools believe and forward the gibberish that Google AI spits out.
I wish there was a way to keep it from showing up here in the forums.

Is there actually a range of checksums that are invalid as checksums and indicate errors instead? What did AI point to as justification for that?
