To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi,

I got a kenwood tk 840 uhf mobile radio. I got it programmed but am highly confused on how to do a scan list. I have the scan option turned on but the radio only shows a small "s" for scan but actually wont scan. I tried to make a scan list but it will only let me scan the first 2 channels, and i cant edit the other channels to make them scan compatible. does anyone know how to do this..

Thanks,

Cody

the 840 is kinda a unique animal; not intended for routine LMR use.

I'm looking at my scan default file; have the following settings for Conventional usage mode:
Feature Options
Aux Switch: Del/Add
Scan Switch: Fix Sys Scan
OffHookScan: disabled (requires mic hanger to be grounded in ordere to scan); enable if that's your preference.

Channel programming:
enter just one frequency per System. If you have 4 freqs you want the radio to be programmed for, your first channel's info would be entered into System 1, Ch 1 location. Your second channel's info would be entered in System 2, Ch 1, your third channels info would be entered in System 3, Ch 1.... and so on.

Sounds weird ? Yep; but this is how we always programmed the 840 & 940 for a customer that wanted to scan (in the Conventional Mode) . Although, it's been about 8-9 years since I last saw an 840... so I can't remember any of the specifics as to why we did it this way.

Ok,

Is there a way to turn off the release tone for the radio. The release tone sounds like a 1980's radio.

I'm not so certain about what you are describing, but in Feature Options have both Free Sys Ring Back and Clear to Talk as "no"

in Optional Signalling, have Alert, Transpond, and AutoReset set to Disable

On the channel screen, have Call, Horn, Opt Sig, Bsy, Data as "no"
