To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello. I have recently purchased 4 Kenwood TK-840 radios on ebay, I am able to program 3 of them but the 4th powers on and flashes "UNPROG" and I can not figure out how to get it to go into program mode from either the software or the radio itself. Any suggestions? Is the there a special key combo I need to hold while I hit the power key? Is there a jumper inside I can reset it with or something? Any help is appreciated. 73's K0LTN

May need to dig a little deeper on it. Flashing unprog seems to many letters for a 2 digit LED.

No, there is no special key other than firmware programming, press and hold back key, while power on.

Been many years since I touched a TK-840, but I thought they had an 8 digit alphanumeric display.

Ok. The TK-D840 is way after my Kenwood days. Back when I did Kenwood I really liked the 840, 940 and 941.

It just means there is no program in the radio.

Make sure you have the correct software and cable. When you get a program loaded in the radio, that message will go away.

If programming with software, you don't need to push any buttons on the radio. Under program in the software top drop down menu, just click on "write program to radio"

It could be corrupt firmware also if it flashing. It has been a long time, so I can't say for sure. Just re flash it.

No, no, no. Not corrupt firmware.

I have been playing around with programming a TK860, and TK860G this week, and it just means there is no program in the radio.

It has been years since we maintained TK-840's, so my brain is fuzzy. Normally when the display is blinking it is firmware related.

I can program all my other radios just fine, when I try to write to the radio the software tries but gives me a could not communicate with the radio error. I can't write anything too it. Was also hoping there was maybe a clone mode I could send it into so I can just clone one over to it and see if that fixes the communication issue somehow.

Oxidation/corrosion on the contacts in the jack? I've also seen the pins get bent down from a mic being plugged in forever and not make contact with the programming cable.

I was just going to suggest the same thing.

I just purchased a couple beat up TK860's of eBay and one of them had a bent pin in the mic jack. I fixed it with a tweezers and a tooth pick. (not fun). They both work well, but don't look too pretty.

You should try to read from it first. That's virtually always the rule of thumb on a radio-read from it first, and save that. Then do you want to do with it, and save that as a separate file.

Try putting the radio into Firmware programming mode. Press and hold the SYS UP key and power the radio on, hold the SYS UP key for 2 seconds. I believe at that point you should see the checksum if the firmware is valid, if not hit the SCAN key. Again it has been so long since I worked on 840, 350, and 353's so I may be incorrect of the checksum showing before it is flashed. but I do know the firmware could get corrupted when the radio is in service, I repaired a lot of TK-350's that would do it when users would set the radios on fork lift chargers.
