:( I have a TM-271 with a problem. The symptoms are as follows.

  • In order to receive stations, you must set the squelch to "0". Yes, that means you will hear static unless you're using ctcss
  • Even with the squelch set to zero and carrier squelch, It only receives stations when set to narrowband. On ham repeaters running wide, this translates to very low audio.
  • Clicking noise coming through the speaker when tuning the dial. Sounds like playing cards on bicycle spokes.
  • Radio mysteriously going into reverse ("R") for no apparent reason when turning the ch selector knob.

A full reset didn't solve the problem. Any ideas?

I believe now that it's the wideband filter. Designed to go bad or so it seems... and not just on Kenwood ham gear but also on LMR too.
The link below explains it in better detail.
Yahoo! Groups
Since RR is highly indexed into google and yahoo groups is not, I'm sure others will be ending up here when they search the web for this problem with their tm-271a.
It does require membership to view the post unfortunately.
