Merry Christmas to all readers.

I received a new Kenwood TS-2000 today, relatively new ham so it is my first "giant" receiver and my first radio not an HT. We've been working on it for hours now and have gotten nowhere.

I'm a tech so I thought the best start would be to try programming in and using my favorite 2 m repeater. My parents are also hams so we've been testing with me on the HT outside and one of them on the Kenwood with my 40-foot tower/Diamond antenna.

I'm blind and so I can't read the manual, but Dad said you need to program the TX freq on VFO "A" and the RX on VFO "B". So far the receive works good, as when I test on the HT it comes in great, but the Kenwood never hits the repeater. Sometimes it comes in simplex on the output for the repeater, and other times I hear nothing at all.
Are we doing this totally wrong? I explained as best I can--you can probably tell I'm not so confident myself--but ask any questions you might need to help and I'll gladly answer. I don't want anything technical yet, just want to see it work okay on the repeater.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

first check that antenna with an analyzer to see if the antenna is correct on the proper freq. then test the radio into a dummy load to see if its making the correct power out, then be sure the squelch is not in the wrong mode !!!
