Hi,

New to repeater operations. I have aquired a super nice Kenwood TS-711A. I have a repeater near me that requires DCS to access. Is there a way to get this functionality for a Kenwood TS-711A? My radio has the tone board and also Kenwoods Digital Code Squelch systen for recieve but I haven't been able to find a way to tsned DCS code when transmitting. Any help will be greatly appriciated.

The 711A does not support industry standard digital coded squelch (DCS), also known as digital private line (DPL).

The Kenwood DCS in this radio is a proprietary system that was only supported by a few Kenwood amateur radios in the 1980's and was used for selective signaling, call sign display and an automatic QSY feature called DCL.

To transmit standard DCS/DPL with this radio you would need to add some type of external DCS encoder. Something like a Midian or Com-Spec board might work if you can find one. Another possibility is to add an old test set like the Motorola DPL Test Set or the Motorola Code Synthesizer.

Any option is going to require opening up the radio to make modifications, it's probably less hassle to just pick up a cheap 2 meter FM radio that includes DCS and keep the 711 intact for weak signal work.
