• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

    Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules.     If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

    To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

    This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Kenwood VP-8000 Freeze

Hey all so I have a dept issued Kenwood VP-800 (radio info says software 8.40.20.97 could not find a firmware) that has completely locked up on me 6-7 times in the past 2 months since it was issued. Screen freezes no traffic then when I notice no traffic in a while and check the screen it’s frozen. I turn the radio off and the screen stays on frozen and the only way to fix it is to pull the battery. I’m sure the fix is to turn it in and get a re-issue but I was wondering if anyone else has seen this before?

New firmware fixed mine. One thing that could trigger a freeze is if you switch channels and hit PTT before new channel fully lands (there is some delay). I would be looking for in range 8Tac repeater and kerchunking as soon as I turned channel knob.

8.42.30 to be exact (there have been multiple 8.42 releases). If it's a big deal to get it updated, you might want to wait for the new release, which is due out in a week or two.

I was just going to mention that the VM8000's we just got in have 8.42.33 in them, which has not been released.

I wanted to report a similar issue and solution to this thread.

Since receiving my VP8000 around mid January, I've loved it.

About 3 weeks in to having it, it began the lockup issue. It would beep the power on tone a few times, then I would look down and it said, "Self Test Failed - Contact Kenwood Support"

I contacted KW and they sent me an overnight shipping label. They found the issue after having the radio only a couple hours in hand at the shop. In the programming, I had a couple of DMR channels where I had not selected an "RX Group ID" in the Talkgroup box under the channel section (see attached screetshot). They told me that it must be set to either an RX group, or "None". The radio wasn't coded of what to do if it didn't have an RX group assigned to the channel. They said the next update of Armada will not allow the codeplug to be programmed if there is not an RX group assinged to a DMR channel. This happened almost the same day as the release of v1.44, so I'm sure that it will be the next update.

Great info! To be clear, is this in the current version, 1.44.12, released 2025-02-27?
