KERSEY - About 150 people including dive teams and a helicopter are searching a stretch of the South Platte River for a four-year-old boy who disappeared Friday night while driving an all-terrain vehicle.

Weld County Undersheriff Margie Martinez says searchers have found a shoe believed to belong to the boy, and a fender believed to have come from his ATV.

She says the boy was last seen Friday evening riding near the river in northeastern Colorado. Sheriff's deputies, neighbors and firefighters from several towns began searching Friday night.

Martinez says radio dispatchers placed a reverse-9-1-1 call to neighbors, asking them to search their outbuildings and property. She says a young child who is frightened or tired might simply lie down and go to sleep.

KERSEY - More than 300 searchers are still scouring the South Platte River near Kersey searching for a 4-year-old boy who disappeared Friday night while driving an all-terrain vehicle near the river.

4-year-old boy goes missing while riding ATV

Weld County Undersheriff Margie Martinez says about 180 of those people are area residents who are volunteering to help search-and-rescue agencies and law enforcement searchers.

Martinez says the river is much shallower Sunday than the past two days, and searchers are going back over areas they covered Friday night and Saturday.

Martinez says there has been no sign of Sam Cockroft since searchers found one of his boots and some pieces of his ATV Saturday morning.

Platte Valley Fire Protection District Captain Barry Schaefer says the boy had been taught how to float on his ATV in the water.

On Friday night, recent heavy rain had raised the level of the river by more than three feet higher than usual, meaning the boy could have floated for miles. But authorities say it's just as likely that he could be caught in thick vegetation along the banks. The river is muddy and visibility below the surface is less than six inches.

Body Of Missing 4-Year-Old Found

Sam Cockroft Hadn't Been Seen Since Friday Night

UPDATED: 7:32 pm MDT August 7, 2005

KERSEY, Colo. -- The body of missing 4-year-old Weld County boy was found by searchers on the edge of the South Platte River Sunday evening.

Sam Cockcroft's body had washed up on shore about a mile from the command post that was set up to coordinate the search for him. It was discovered at 5:30 p.m., officials said.

About 180 residents of eastern Weld County joined law enforcement and search and rescue crews Sunday to help look for the body, who disappeared two days earlier while driving a four-wheel all-terrain vehicle near the river.

There had been no sign of him since Saturday morning, when searchers found one of his boots and pieces of his ATV in the river, she said.

On Friday night, recent heavy rains had made the river 3 feet higher than normal, meaning the boy could have floated for miles. But authorities said it was just as likely that he was caught in thick vegetation along the banks.

Cockroft had been taught how to float on his ATV in the water, Platte Valley Fire Protection District Capt. Barry Schaefer said. Martinez has said it is not unusual for such young children to drive ATVs in a rural, agricultural community.

it may not be unusual for a 4 year old to be driving an atv but it is very stupid to be doing it and very stupid of a parent to allow it
