• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi Everyone,

Was wondering if anyone might have run in to a similar problem. I have an arduino KFDtool and the KFDtool program just wont recognize that it's connected, whatever I do.

Any thoughts on how to approach?

So far I've:
  1. Updated Windows
  2. Updated USB Drivers
  3. Installed Arduino Drivers
  4. Tried using different releases of the KFDtool software (1.4.0 and 1.5.0)
I'm on Windows 8.1.

Thanks for any help.

The Arduino based KFDShield does NOT use the KFDTool software, but a fork which Dan assisted in developing. You MUST use the KFDShield, not KFDTool software. Did you get the software from the KFDShield gitHub site, AND flash the Arduino with the proper KFDShield firmware? When you start the Shield software for keyloading, it will fail with a COM port error (a known issue which will be resolved in a future update). Nat is very proactive with the Shield, so if there are real issues, he has addressed quickly in the past. Mine works flawlessly, across several different computers and radio families.

I have found if you load IDE, then the COM port remains constant which helps having to change it all the time in S/W

Old thread but I've just received a KFD Shield and uno r3. The software referenced from "Shield" site is flat pack and there is no installer that I can find (KFDToolGui.exe). The original software site program will install (msi) but not find "device" as Shield site said would happen if you didn't use their version of KFDTool. When trying to flash firmware using IDE program it requires an .ino file which is nowhere to be found. Original site gives fw as .cfp file which KFDTOOLS understands but since the only version of that I can install doesn't find my "device" I cannot go any further. This thread is the closet thing I can find to my problem after hours of web searching.
Running a toughbook Win10 machine. IDE can find device and load example fw (blinking light) so I know my laptop can communicate to arduino.

For us non code monkeys the GitHub site is a flashback to basic and old bulletin boards.
