• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

    Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

    If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

    To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Define "Out of band". Without knowing where you are trying to make it work we can't give you any good answers. For example, if you're talking about making it work on 7.000 MHz you might get one answer, if you're trying to get it to work on 5.000 GHz it might be something else. For something more reasonable, 800 MHz might be something else as well.

Specs indicate it's supposed to transmit on the ranges of 136-174 MHz and 406-512 MHz so those shouldn't really be defined as "out of band" for the radio (while your frequency may very well be defined as "out of band" for your license!!!). There may still be mode limitations to what you're trying to do so that information is also important for you to provide. There are often rules stating that a radio used for operating under certain types of services (CB, FRS, GMRS, MURS, Marine, Commercial, etc.) require a radio be certified for use on that service. Even if you can program the radio to work there, it may or may not be legal to use there, depending on the certifications that radio has been granted.

Examples of what you may want to do could include (details are only examples, be specific for your situation):

* Talk and receive on the assigned Marine Band frequencies while on my boat, in the marina, car, or nearby home.
* Talk and receive my nearby airport tower and the aircraft flying in and out of it.
* Talk and receive on my work's frequency of 462.8725 MHz analog FM.
* Listen to my local area NOAA weather (aka weather radio) broadcasts.
* Talk and receive on my local 2 meter and/or UHF ham repeaters.
* ...

I don't think that the band modification software works on the uv-6x as it has special firmware for the US retailer that imported it. It should already be opened up to the limits of the hardware (for reasonable tx and rx).

AFAIK, the KGuv-6x is marketed as a commercial model and should already be "open" for the commercial VHF and UHf frequencies. I also believe that the free CHIRP programming software supports this model (as a uv6).

The radio is already as open as it can get, given the hardware limitations.
