• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Is this for kids using radios under the provisions of FRS or with GMRS full / high power levels under the license? Lots of options exist with higher power levels.

If you are happy with the 505 and you have the programming software/cable, that's probably your best bet. You an set them up the way you want for your kids.
The price is kind of high, but probably your best bet for a legal Part 95 radio that isn't a BaoFeng. But then again, if your kids are hard on things and you expect to be replacing radios frequently, then a BaoFeng might be a good option. But I'd probably choose a bubble pack radio over a BaoFeng. I think the quality control will be higher and it would be easier to return.

One thing I found with non-technical users, keep the programming really simple. It's surprisingly easy to get an "over programmed" radio into a place where it won't work and getting out of that can be difficult for inexperienced users. I often set up radios so all channels are programmed identically and the only real functions available to the end users are on/off/volume and push to talk.
Functions like 'lock' keys can be really helpful...
As they get more comfortable with the radio, you can carefully open up features.

Hi, one more question: What is the TX Squelch Tail for and do I need it on?

Depends. Sometimes with repeaters or some other radios, when they stop transmitting, you'll get a static crash at the end. The TX Squelch tail setting is probably like the Motorola "reverse burst" where it inverts the phase of the PL tone when you let go of the PTT button to let the other radios shut off the audio.

If that's what it is, you can turn it on and it shouldn't impact anything.
