FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: DATE: 05-23-2008 TIME: 3:00 P.M.
On May 23, 2008 at approximately 11:34 A.M., Colorado State Troopers responded to a fatal crash on Highway 287 milepost 104 in Kiowa County. A white Dodge Avenger and blue Freightliner semi truck and trailer were northbound on Highway 287. The Dodge Avenger was attempting to pass the Freightliner when it collided head-on with a southbound green Dodge Caravan. The Dodge Avenger then spun counter clockwise colliding with the left side of the trailer of the Freightliner.
What we know at this time:
Two occupants of the Dodge Avenger and two occupants of the Dodge Caravan sustained fatal injuries.
Three other occupants sustained serious injuries and were transported Prowers Medical Center in Lamar.
The driver of the Freightliner sustained no injuries.
The crash and subsequent investigation led to a closure of Highway 287 with detours in place.
Unknown if alcohol or drugs are suspected as contributing factors.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation and an update will follow as more information is obtained.
