Nah, it's not slow, just quiet. :) I asked a question another thread about a unit called "Angel 2" in Elmore County. It's obviously not a chopper so I was wondering what it was. We've had a ton of woods fires break out down here, some of which seem to be folllowing a travel pattern of a firebug. Have you guys seen any big increases in woods fires?

Looks like Sunday could be a big weather day with more severe storms so that might perk things up. And I did hear a Prattville PD call from a woman who had a racoon on her porch that was hissing and scaring her. They dispatched two units so we apparently have pretty aggressive raccons down here. And there was a woman who requested an ambulance at 0100 on Sunday becuase she had a headache. We just don't post all these high priority calls so as not overwhelm you big city boys. :)

Hey Dave... we count on you to drum up business and make it exciting. :) Most of the exciting stuff I hear is on your channel, anyway. Maybe I think that because you're PD channel is the only one I listen to, though.

Keep up the great work, Dave!

That's OK... Nobody posted anything about our big incident up here on Monday.

I was at the scene, too busy to post.

I saw that on TV. Certainly a bigger deal than our angry racoon. :) It sounds like there was a failure of the crossing gates, where the lights were activated but the gates never came down. Still, I'm suprised the trucker woould get in this situation. I think that trucks carrying hazardous materials are required to make a complete stop, look for approaching trains, and then proceed. Seems like something went terribly wrong. While it's unfortunate that the trucker lost his life, I'm glad none of the firefighters were hurt - that was a pretty impressive fireball.

Jim, actually, (at least what I heard) the truck left the roadway and crashed into the train. It did not happen at a crossing.

(edited to add:) I had not read the story posted, seems like they are talking about the crossing.

It seems from the story that the truck was struck at the crossing and then dragged down the tracks for some distance. Maybe we can more details from MorganAL.

I actually live on the road the incident occurred on so I have first hand knowledge about the area. If you are west bound on Wilhite Rd and are approaching the RR crossing, you are coming down a very steep mountain. Even when you are stopped at the crossing, you are still sitiing on an incline. My Chevy Venture even complains about stopping at the crossing when coming down the mountain.

I doubt anyone will ever know what really happened. These are the facts: The truck was loaded with approxiamtely 2200 gallons of Propane. The truck was west bound on Wilhite Rd.

This is my guess: He was coming down the mountain and lost his brakes. In an attempt to keep from slamming into the side of the train at who knows what speed, he attempted to put the truck in the ditch on the left side of the road. The left side of the road doesn't have have much of, if any ditch. Instead of stopping, it slowed the truck a little and caused the truck to strike the side of the train. The truck was then dragged approxiamtely 1000 ft and rolled into a ditch beside the tracks.

I do know that there were no skid marks at all and the gates at the crossing were not damaged at all. I have a few pics from the scene I will try to post sometime. None of the vehicle though. Comms people usually stay away from things that are burning and have the potential to explode.
