I often hear the Kokomo dispatcher give 'grid' and 'road' information. example: Grid 124 Road 3

Does anyone know if these are patrol areas or are they trying to verbally encrypt their communications?

I, too, have often wondered what the "grid" and "RD" mean and what they are for in KPD.

I can have a friend of mine ask a friend of his that is on KPD what that's all about. I will let you know if I hear anything.

I am not sure how Howard County uses these but my agency uses grids for reporting information as well as mapping. To the best of my knowledge a Reporting District, or "RD" is the same as a grid. Mostly this terminology is used on our fire dispatching side. If our fire departments are responding ‘out of district’ or to an unfamiliar or new subdivision they can ask us for the reporting district or grid which they can then look up the correct map and find the easiest way in also where hydrants are located.

Most agencies have their area "gridded" to establish stats for accidents, crime, etc..occuring in certain areas. "RD" or "event" numbers are also placed on their reports as a reference number to cross reference the reports to the CAD entry.

Ok, thanks. That makes sense to me.

The "RD", or reporting district is not the same as the grid. There are 17 districts in Kokomo, each is assigned 3 to 5 officers. The entire city is layed out on a grid, and each intersection has a number. It makes it easier than writing out the entire street. Instead of "Washington and US 31" they can just write something like "506-B"
