The news copters still have to rely on good old fashioned two-way radios to talk to the desk, alot of good info can be caught during breaking events. I submitted the TV news freqs to the RR database as RR is pretty light in the media section.

I noticed Most freq lists on the web are way outdated or the PL tones are wrong etc, (they seem to love to mess around alot with their freqs and PL's)... I tend to lockout the transmission/engineering freqs as it's just guys pointing antennas. Here is the most active TV news freqs I recommend....any others?

KCBS/KCAL desk 450.2875 -71.9Hz
KNBC TV 4 copter 161.7600 -123.0Hz
KTLA TV-5 desk 450.3500 -162.2Hz
KABC TV-7 desk 450.1375 -123.0Hz
KCBS/KCAL copters 450.2125 -71.9Hz
KTTV/KCOP desk 450.5875 -88.5Hz

some others...
KFWB AM desk 450.8500 -107.2Hz
KNX AM remotes 455.7000

traffic reporting....
KEZY traffic 450.6375
KISS traffic 450.9500
KLSX traffic 450.4500
AIRWATCH 450.8250
KMPC traffic 450.7500
KABC traffic 450.0500
KFWB traffic 455.5125
KNX/KFRG 455.9500
KFI traffic 170.1500

Hello Uplink: Great posting!

I will program these into my scanner as I like to track the fire, police and the Cal Trans traffic. This should be a great addition. Thanks a million, a good call here.

Several radio stations are operating studio links and doing remote broadcasts in the high 25 and low 26 megahertz range. They are using FM narrow band emissions. I've heard KABC radio on 26.190 mhz during 11 meter skip openings. WFLA comes in from the east coast too.

I've picked up KTLA reporters, and what sounded like engineers, on 26.13 and 26.47 prior to and feeding into, their studio and into llive TV broadcasts. Not on there very often, but they're usually pretty strong signals into the NW SFValley.

KFI used to use 170.15 for mobiles, but was always very weak in my area.

That's a sort of peculiar frequency. As far back as I can remember it has been a Relay Press frequency in most of the country, but a fire, now PW, frequency from about Pennsylvania north into the New England states.

In Los Angeles I've mostly heard KWKW on there, mostly in Spanish, obviously. "ka dublay-u, ka dublay-u". Think it's owned by or an affiliate of ESPN now.

Great listings guys.

oops, yes, 450.2875 did get changed to the KCAL IFB as you guys noted above.

I found these below to be most busy, and useful for hearing the helo activity during all the rains and flooding lately...

KTLA TV-5 desk 450.3500 -162.2Hz
KABC TV-7 desk 450.1375 -123.0Hz
KCBS/KCAL desk (F-1) 450.2125 -71.9Hz
KTTV/KCOP desk (F-2) 450.5875 -88.5Hz

strangley KNBC's copter seems very quiet lately, was usually on 161.760, wondering if its flying less due to the economy and ratings or they found another freq.

And I was hearing KABC hundreds of miles up the coast. WFLA was a 3,000 mile pickup on my old Yaesu FT 757 GX transceiver using just a common 5/8 wave 11 meter ground plane antenna. KABC sounded like engineers or field reporters on scene. The east coast feed was definitely a studio uplink as I heard all of the commercials and newscasts along with the callers on that afternoon.

KNX IFB has been off air for about a week, I figured due to the rain last week, but it's still transmitting a dead carrier. Anyone got any info?

Actually, we have a "secret" way of talking to the chopper.... ;-)

I don't think I'm revealing any company secrets here, but this is the set up at KCBS/KCAL

Ch 1 Desk
Ch 2 TOC (Television Opertaions Center)
Ch 3 Car to Car Simplex
Ch 4 Desk Simplex
Ch 5 IFB
Ch 6 IFB

(I may have Ch 3 and 4 mixed up, I very rarely use the radio)

There isn't a dedicated "Chopper" frequency. The chopper will talk to the desk on Ch1 along with all the other news vans, and talk to TOC on Ch 2 to get their shot "dialed" in.

Thanks for the info Mick. Much appreciated :)

As for the secret way of talking w/ the chopper, you must be using the microwave or satellite link? Sometimes I watch the CBS 2 LA feed on my satellite and hear the chopper talking to the station. Pretty interesting stuff! :D

We just have them come up on the dial up IFB, which can't be monitored. :).

That's the same way I relayed info to KCRA's chopper in Sacramento when I didn't want anyone to hear me, never knew other markets were doing it also. It's a great way to get around the two-way.

Do you use a sat phone or cell phone for the IFB?
