Satcom

The boys (and ladies) from Brazil were very active today (morning) on several of the freq's noted above by N1RGR and first time in a while I heard a Spanish conversation on one of the 253 Mhz channels as our favorite guy was singing away (in POR) on a freq in 263. mhz channel at the same time - must have been a real party!

And the 256.8500 data stream / secvox was loud and clear as well...

UHF Follow on satellites.

For several years into OEF, you could get onto a UHF follow on satellite, with a radio in single channel mode with no encryption. You could transmit voice and data up to 2 Mb files. Then this loophole was closed up after some people sent too large a file and got noticed.
Was fun up until then to monitor military traffic.

Current state of SatCom?

I have had my AOR 8600 MK II set on over 250 different SatCom Freqs for some time now and still occasionally flip it on to see what's cooking with our south of the equator pirates. Is there anything interesting at all on any of the SatCom or other MilSats these days? Anything at all? I know they are really old and likely untrusted at this point but they are still functioning so maybe they are being used as something other than a pirate curiosity? I still hear the waterdrip on a few freqs and occasional pirates and open carriers. The carriers may be local interferance for me however as they are generally quite strong.

I built the X ant design found on the web some time back but have yet to deploy it on the roof of the super secret listing room.

When is the last time anyone heard any messages of any official nature on any open MilSat?

Thanks all. Considering an Icom IC-R8600 soon. Might be good to keep an eye on a swath of downlink freqs. Currently using my Icom discone for RX. Might add a small amp to it and get the X ant up there on the roof yet this year.

There's a few transponders that have almost continuous data on them, and several others that seem to be polling data at a regular rate. More rare is what appears to be encrypted voice, based on the sporadic nature of it.

But, yeah, there's still some use.

Yesterday I logged these on CONUS sats

260.725 Halo 1 and Pug: had about 5 mins of troubleshooting comms.

261.575 Open carrier with counting, reciting of phonetic alphabet and some other repeating phrases.
(Reminds me of this activity from 2012)
