Lafayette's Imagination Station Science Museum hosted their 24th Annual "Hands on Transportation" Event for 2025 this past Saturday, September 20. I learned about this event at last second, so apologies for not giving a heads up to the group.
Multiple vehicles were on display:
- Former Lafayette Fire Quint 64 (now a reserve engine)
- Former Lafayette Fire 1937 Ahrens-Fox fire truck from the Historic Five Points Museum
- Lafayette Police SWAT Response Vehicle
- Lafayette Public Works Department (Street Sweeper, Refuse Truck, Storm Sewer Pump Truck, Front End Loaders)
- CityBus Passenger Bus
- An Indiana State Police Cruiser
- Wabash National Trailer (their manufacturing plant and HQ is in Lafayette)
- Caterpillar (one of their diesel engine plants is in Lafayette)
- Milestone Highway Construction Company (including several Caterpillar construction vehicles)
- Tipmont Concrete large boom equipped concrete delivery truck
- A couple of local trucking companies
- A fabulously restored former Bennett's Towing International Tow Truck ("on Killer 41, 2 miles south of Dead Man's Curve" per the truck cab)
Big surprise for the day was Evonik Industries Tippecanoe Labs two fire apparatus on display: Command Vehicle 1606 and Truck 1601.
See photos of Truck 1601's pre-delivery set-up at the factory here:
I had forgotten about this important private fire department in Tippecanoe County. As with any large industrial facility, having specialized equipment and training to handle very specific needs/precautions is very important. Their Captain and Lieutenant were very helpful in explaining the roles and activities of this FULL-TIME paid department. While they mostly handle on-site incidents only, they do have mutual aid agreements with other area departments and have responded on several hazmat calls throughout the county in the past.
Comms are on the plant's DMR system:
Whenever you learn about any similar event, PLEASE POST DETAILS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE IF YOU CAN!
And take the opportunity - it's a great way to thank your local first responders and public works employees.
You'll definitely learn something!
