After years of being absent from listening to Police/Fire/EMS calls, and being a former police officer, I decided to get back into listening to what is going on in my community. I purchased a scanner that could be program and for three weeks enjoyed listening to the "excitement". Then Lake County went to a central dispatch and has implemented a Project 25 Phase II trunking system. While I am trying to educate myself on this, I still need some expert help, spelled out in "layman's" terms. First, is there a scanner currently on the market that can pick up these types of radio signals?( I sent the other one back for a refund) Second, are these signals encrypted? and Third, Other than Radio Reference is their any other place that could offer assistance in this new stuff? Any help that one could provide would be greatly appreciated. Gone are are the days of sticking a in a crystal or punching in a radio frequency and you could listen to your hearts content. I get that. But, please HELP!

I am retired from the Fayetteville Police Dept.,NC and went thru the same thing. If you dept. is not encrypted check out the Uniden Bearcat scanners that will do P1/P2

Yes you need a scanner capable of picking up Phase II, either Uniden or Whistler both have scanners capable to pick up this new system. Most of the new system is not encrypted, how ever they more then likely will have some encrypted things as far as special channels that need to be encrypted, RR is probably going to be your best resource for assistance for a scanner, I don't know of any box type of store in the area that could possibly help, but there might be and I just don't know about it.

This thread link on RR should get you started as it was started when the new system was just being talked about and goes all the way up until now.
