Lake County Public Safety system and an SDR dongle

I'm considering getting an SDR dongle so I can listen to the LCPS system here from my house. My 436HP can't handle the simulcast distortion and financial issues make affording a SDS100/200 an impossibility at this time.

I'm just wondering if anyone uses a SDR dongle to listen to the system and if so, what is/are the best brand(s) to purchase, and how easy is it to set everything up?

I use the RTL-SDR been using for about 1 year have had no problems, I listen to about 10 Lake county channels, using 4 of them I listen to-both the Hoosier Safety= T and the County Public systems, I am sure there might be better ones but for the price they work great for me. Also using SDR Trunk program with these.
