When the system went online in May all LPD channels were encrypted. I have monitored the system with Unitrunker on and off for the last several weeks and LPD has been running in the clear for at least the last two weeks. How long that will last is anyone's guess.

With all the negative media attention swirling around LPD the last thing they need is to be accused of trying to hide from the public's scrutiny by encrypting their communications, but who knows.

For the time being if you have a means of monitoring them have at it, unfortunately ONLY the PSR-800 has the ability at this time. No other scanner has the capability nor are any up-gradable to do so.

The county has about 10 towers through out the county and every since they switched from VHF / UHF it's always been lousy. don't understand why

It is a well known problem with simulcast systems such as Polk County. Transmissions are sent from multiple transmitters from multiple locations at the same time, so depending on your location your scanner is receiving these at slightly different times confusing it and causing severe distortion. Of course, $$$$ Motorola radios do not suffer from this problem but scanners do.

For fixed location monitoring you can point a directional antenna at the strongest transmitter near you and attenuate the other transmitters and greatly improve reception. For mobile monitoring it is it's all about your current location.

I've actually had pretty good results from this antenna:

for receiving the Polk County system. For under $10 it was worth a try and it greatly improved my reception. Your results may vary.

TG 51.................TG 83
TG 53.................TG 85 Fire
TG 55.................TG 113
TG 57 LPD........TG 125

Because the System is TDMA Phase II i can not hear any audio from any Talk group UNLESS a Polk County radio is monitoring a channel
pcso air 4 is using LPD TG 57 and it is FDMA while Polk is on the channel

Don't have to. You can just use the Windows calculator in scientific (or programmer mode). ?

I recently started monitoring the Polk County system and most of the transmissions end up being garbled. Do they sell the antenna mentioned above at the local Staples or is it online only?

Yes, only the PD groups are encrypted. Fire/EMS, Public works, Utilities all in the clear (but phase 2 obviously).
