Lancaster County - P25 System (Was OpenSky System Dumped)

Quick question for those of you with the BCD 436. How is your reception?

I have a 996xt with the stock antenna and it doesn't travel. About MAYBE three miles away from the Northeast Tower. And it picks up the Northwest and Central tower great as well.

I am curious about the 436 and may pick it up with my income tax just curious how the reception is on it, I just want it for the grab and go.

I was using Proscan and streaming the 996xt to my phone. but if I go out of county, then it's useless.

I live on the West Shore of Harrisburg and I have been picking up transmissions using a wildcard and most sound like Police related transmissions..

Man it would be nice if I could pick up Dauphin at all over here, but nothing.

Only the police (northwest units and northeast) and Youth Intervention are on it fully. So that's probably why you only hear them.

Rarely have I picked up Public Works, only a few times during snow storms. I really can't wait until everyone moves over though.

I checked the thread and couldn't find this: I've been keeping up on the system, but not which scanners will work. A friend just asked me if Radio Shack's Pro-652 would work? Apparently he just got it or can get it for a deal.

I moved up from near the MD border in Oct and have been listening in the Northeast now running a 996xt. Over the last month or so I have heard a lot of repeats but for the last week it is sounding pretty solid. Anyone know if there were changes or what is going on with the system?

i know tis is not on topic but i heard YORK CO. new system is going to be phase II. so if your buying a scanner phase I works on most systems but if you want to hear york [ if rumor i herd is true ] you will need phase II

York County, Pa new system is no rumor, it will be 800 MHZ Phase II

According to the documents on the Youk Co EMA site, the new system
will be 700 Mhz, which makes sense. I don't think there are any more
800 Mhz frequencies available.....

Been working too much over the last few weeks and finally got some free time to start listening. I am getting great strength but over the weekend I was getting crap.

Funny thing is of all the years I have been into my radios - my wife has never has. Her quote: "pozo de dinero". That was until I was able to get some channels OTA (Channel 49 & 15). (I don’t like paying the cable man). This weekend her happiness was my pain.

So in her words I bought another toy to measure the OTA signal we are getting.

I can’t imagine there is correlation but what else is an old man to do with his time.

Was out in Lancaster County earlier today and monitored the P25 system. For the most part reception and audio quality was very good - I was in the eastern part of the county along US 30 and PA 340 and 772 along with Lancaster City and up to Lititz. Countywide VHF Police Channel A is still being simulcasted on talkgroup 3001. Also a radio ID of "0" was seen for the console on talkgroup 3002 - is that the actual console ID or is that some sort of patch? I wasn't getting any ID's on talkgroup 3001. PW talkgroup 4172 was very active today as well.

I suspect they may be waiting for spring to run more tests on the system when leaves are back on the trees and then bring the rest of the user groups onto the system. From what I heard today the system seems to be running pretty good with no requests to repeat transmissions and such.

I keep logging it here and there but there isn't much to it. I was here at the desk and picked it up this time to verify that it was them talking. It's only one sided conversations though. Two or Three different ID's and they call out to someone and then nothing, but they continue talking and then gone. Not sure what the deal is with that. I know they have an encrypted talk group, so maybe they're on the wrong group?

With the rest of it, I let it log during the snow storm and a decent amount of public works was on it and the normal Northwest and Northeast units.

Coroner got logged a few times I found.

It would be so much nicer when everyone else finally moves over.

I have the BCD436 and it works well. I have found it works better with the threshold set at 7 for LCWC P25 Trunking. The issues now are with the systems performance and not the scanners. That's why the remaining municipalities and fire/EMS have not switched from analog.

The problem is with the portables. You may not be hear the reply because its a portable. The balance of the county and Fire/EMS is waiting until all the bugs are resolved. To many dead spots as it is now.

The prison is talking on the system. Since I've started logging since November, I haven't picked up the prison. Just the Youth Intervention Center.

Sounds like you might not have all the frequencies. I hear both sides. I believe each PTT could be on a different Freq.

I think you might be missing some of the Frequencies and only getting half the conversation.

The problem is with the portables. You may not be hear the reply because its a portable. The balance of the county and Fire/EMS is waiting until all the bugs are resolved. To many dead spots as it is now.

I don't believe balance would be this issue. If the portable reaches the tower it is repeated out and should be scanned. If the portable didn't get to the tower you would hear more of dispatch or other units requesting repeats or non-response.

Are the dead spots new? I thought I read an article back in Oct/Sept that they reached 98% coverage.
