My local SO just went Digital APCO-25.. I can hear them talking but not much traffic. I was told they are using Lap Top Computers to communicate with the officers. Is there any way to monitor there lap top communications???

Nope. They are mobile data terminals that are on a secure wireless network. They probably do some of their non-priority calls and all traffic stops on the mobile data terminals, since an officer can update his status (10-8, 10-6, 10-23, etc...) on the terminal. The officers can also run licenses and registration from those terminals. So you are pretty much in the dark unless something priority or officer safety related happens.
By the way, which agency do you speak of, as I have noticed a lot of new P25 licenses popping up around the state.

Actually

ACTUALLY
Most Pd's fire etc...
Use CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch)..
And their networks are similar to WIFI but usually a higher frequency is used
Your average 802.11 b is 2.4 gigahertz / g is a little higher
welll ,
with CAD's they usually use 802. 15 ,.16 etc , etc.
depends, but defntley NOT .11
Motorola is the standard soooo
Anways this topic is somewhat too complicated to be summed in a thread,,,,

if 802.11b is 2.4 gigahertz, how many gigahertz is 802.15? How high up do they go?

Not necessarily. It depends on what kind of equipment they are using. If it is relatively slow speed data they could be on any public safety frequency from 30 - 900 MHz, the 4.9 GHz public safety band or they could be on one of the 802.* bands or they could be using any number of commercial wireless services.

They are all 9600 baud or 19200 baud. That's hardly 'slow speed'

Yes there is BUT consider this ...

1. there was a recent federal mandate; agency computer networks that tie into the national criminal network (NCIC) must be encrypted.

2. because of the encryption - cracking such a network might violate federal law.

3. Texas has a law that specifically forbids intercepting law enforcement MDTs (with or without encryption). This has been in effect since September of 1996 (one might argue the federal requirements make the law obsolete).

I'm not jumping on anyone's case - just want make everyone aware of the situation - particularly as it uniquely pertains to Texas.

In addition, I read on the database that Collin County Sheriff uses Sprint PCS for their network. I have read in other articles about similar services being used around the country.

802.11b/g is your standard WiFi on 2.4 Ghz; 802.15 is your standard BlueTooth on 2.4ghz.

Social engineer it ....

This is where Social Engineering comes into play...
Befriend an insider ie Police Officer, Engineer radio tech, whomever ...
or make a few contacts with the same companies that contract
the same type systems..
I Am NOT encouraging this
buut if it means that much to ya then well
Get you social engineering on...
Ya all do know what social Engineering is right???
Anyhow,
Regards,
Crista

Also this might help :

There is not going to be any radio tech that will program and/or give you a MDT hooked up to the PD's CAD system.

That is a good way to get fired, go to jail and, get your equipment confiscated by the agency you are eve's dropping on. Any agency would take any breech in their internal security very serious. Our agency does and has.

802.11 b/g (WLAN) and 802.15 (Blue Tooth or WPAN) both operate in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz range, specifially 2400 - 2483.5 MHz in the US and Europe. Blue Tooth is technically called WPAN for Wireless Personal Area Network.

802.11a operates in the 5 GHz band.
802.16 is the standard defining WMAN; Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks.

There are several working groups for 802.xx, like 802.20 defining standards for MBWA (Mobile Broadband Wireless Access) and 802.22 for WRAN (Wireless Regional Area Network). IEEE 802 defines networking in general covering both wired and wireless.

There is a ton of info on the IEEE site, http://standards.ieee.org/getieee802/ and also on http://www.ieee802.org.
