As part of the deployment of new APX8000 radios, LAPD will be updating their radio frequency load.

The biggest change is the allocation of actual station non-repeated simplex channels numbered 101-125.
Current talk around/fallback frequencies using repeater mode will be renumbered channels 301-325.

These upcoming changes have already been made in the Db and listed as
> "Future Area Simplex Tacs"
> "Future Area Fallback Repeater Tacs"

Additionally, there are some more random changes to channels among detective, and support frequencies which will be updated in the Db during the coming days.

As in the past, as the new radio load is rolled out there could be some differences noted on air with the channel numbering changes.

Has the LAPD started deploying the APX8000’s yet?

I know they chose to go with the longer extended batteries with these. Not sure why though. I know they give a little more battery life, but the added length and weight is a big turn off.

With the extended battery it will bring them back to the Astro Saber days.

Agreed, the batteries do look ugly but they actually provide much longer battery life than any of the standard batteries. My longer Lithium APX8k batteries easily last 30+ hours with the backlight on and constant TX/RX whereas the standard Lithium batteries barely last 16 hours.

True but on the Sabers the battery would break at the top slide. Or the bottom plate would fracture.

Seems pretty clear to me, the extended battery powered the radio for the entire 12 hour shift.
