If the pursuit goes out of the division or goes on for an extended period of time, a supervisor or air unit may request for all units involved in the pursuit to be switched over to a tactical channel (each bureau is assigned some extra tactical channels to use for this situation and there a some city-wide tactical channels, as well. A few police divisions (stations) make up a geographical operations (patrol) bureau, of which there are four: Central, South, West, and Valley). When the pursuit ends, a supervisor or air unit may request for all units involved to go to simplex (radio-to-radio or local communication only) as to not tie up the normal broadcast channel. In all cases, it is the officer (radio user) who has to make the switching of channels on his or her radio; however, dispatch has the ability to "patch" in other channels.
