Hello,

I have an HP laptop running Windows 10. Whenever I leave the computer on for a long time and then use the Facebook Messenger App and Microsoft Edge at the same time the screen goes dark and then comes back. It will do that a couple times and then stay dark. The computer is still running because there is sound as I am usually watching something on YouTube. In the end I have to turn of the computer and turn it back on. Does anyone have an idea as to why this is happening?

Thank you,

Jim

Hello JDrisc3480

could it possibly be a graphics card issue?

Possibly screen resolution issue?

Are your drivers up to date?

Does the picture come back on if you click the mouse,if so that's the power/sleep function.

you can set your screen to fade to black when no mouse or keyboard activity is registered.

All the drivers are up to date. I don't think that it is a graphics card issue nor a screen resolution issue. The only time it does it is when I have Microsoft Edge open and using the Facebook Messenger App at the same time. I think that it might be an issue between Edge and Facebook Messenger, but I don't know. I say that because I have yet to experience it if I am using Google Chrome and Messenger at the same time.

Have you tried clearing the browsing data and cookies on your Edge?

I suspect they are setup to use different screen drivers - so the swap between them shuts down the video and starts up again with the different driver. When they are running, have a look in device manager and see what driver is running, then swap with the dark out and do it again.

Take a light source, like a flashlight or angle the computer towards a light, and observe if you can see the contents of the screen at all. I'm used to older technology but when back-light troubles came up, that was a way to check for it. If you do see your screen dimly in the background, you can try to replace the inverter.

As to how software can cause this... Those two pieces of software could be running your system hard thereby heating it up. Inverters generate a lot of heat and will be very heat sensitive when they are failing.

Again, my experience is with older technology some years ago so if it is not applicable to stuff of today, please forgive me.
