Laptop USB to 9-pin Serial Port Cable

Does anyone know what I need to make this cable work properly when trying to program radios? What I have is a brand new Dell computer, without serial ports of course, so I bought a USB to 9-pin cable adaptor (Dell sent me a Tripp Lite U209-000-R). I plug it into the cable (9-pin serial) and plug it into my PRO-92 and it will NOT load the software. The scanner wants to "upload" instead of receive.

Now do I have to have a "program" (software/drivers) installed for the USB to Serial Adptor to work correctly? Or am I being niaive to think I can just "plug 'n play"?

Make sure you have the correct serial port designated in your software and computer. In Windows, you do this by checking your system hardware profile to see what serial port the USB adaptor is set on, then in your scanner software, make sure you have the same port set. Also, make sure you have the correct cable for your software and scanner, one that is a two-way cable.

1) You need a program to talk to the scanner. Windows doesn't automatically upload files to it. Go here to download Don Starr's great (and free) program.

2) You need the correct driver for the adapter. Windows should have "found new hardware" as soon as you plugged in the adapter. If that doesn't work (many adapters don't work on scanners with the default Windows driver), go to Tripplite's software page, find the "U209-000-R - USB to Serial Adapter" drivers - down near the bottom of the page, in the "Cable & Connectivity Drivers" section, find your operating system version, download the driver and install it.

Thank you so much, I got this towrk correctly with the Winstar92 program I already had installed! I am going with it was the new drivers and where to put them that Al helped with. Now I hope this cable will work with my 780 also!

You need to enable auto download so your comuter get the ino it needs on your particular cords. I had to do the same.. And my comp downloaded them immediatly.
