First off, welcome to Radioreference, you made a very wise choice to join this group. To familurize yourself with scanning in general & as which brand & model would work best for you, check the WIKI section on scanner types & other topics that may assist you in making an informed decision. Also check the RR database for Michigan to find out the types of communications frequencies & systems in use. I'm sure you will be getting additional replies as time progresses. Good luck & again, welcome, always feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Welcome to RR. Well what scanner is best depends on how much your looking to spend for one. Also you need to think about what you would like to monitor. I have family that lives in Alpena, MI and they just have a cheap 32-512mhz non trunking scanner and pick up most of the area. If your thinking bout picking up the MSP then you'll need a digital scanner. After you answer these questions then we can point you in the right place.

Ok so you need to look in to buying a digital scanner. Depending on your price your looking to spend you can buy new ones for about $400-500. Look on this forum for users selling theirs for around 300 if your looking for used ones. Now the question is what kind of scanner are you looking for a hand-held or one that you would keep in your house. They also make mobile scanners which can be used in your home or in a car. I personally have a radio-shack Pro 96 that I really like the updated model of the pro96 is the pro 106 which is a pretty popular handheld digital scanner. Take a look at this site to help decide whats best for you - View and Compare Your Scanner Options.
