I have a BCD436HP and a Larsen Tri-band antenna. I have a vehicle mount for the antenna but was looking to see if there is a way to direct mount the antenna to the scanner also? Wouldn't be used often but would like to have the option for times I'm away from the home antenna and outside the vehicle for extended period without all the extra cable from a spare mount that I have been using for this situation. I can't seem to locate a SMA or BNC direct to the NMO mount the antenna uses. The tri-band picks up significantly more of what I want to hear than the stock antenna when tested side by side.

The NMO mount on your vehicle is creating a ground plane that contributes significantly to the reception. Mounting in directly to your scanner would lose that significant increase due to the lack of the ground plane, not to mention it would be extremely unwieldy. You're better off getting a Diamond SRH789.

Edited to add: @doctordialtone beat me to it while I was typing my reply ;).

There are NMO to SMA male and female adapters as well as N female and SO-239 but its not recommended to put that right on the scanner.

Thanks. I'll go with the additional antenna, just thought an adapter might be an easier option. Didn't know about the grounding plane. Does that SRH789 work well through the fire service bands? Looking for 850s as well as 150s&450s. I'll start doing some research on it now. Thanks

It has a sticker on it with markings that indicate the number of telescoping sections to extend to optimize it to your band of choice. When extended for a specific band, it blows the stock antenna out of the water in my experience. According to the specs, gain is 2.15 dBi from 95-300 MHz and 3.2 dB from 300-1100 MHz.

I’m not sure what you’re actually asking. Do you mean literally trying to stick the antenna onto the top of your 436HP? Or just connect the antenna’s feed line to the 436HP while you’re in the car? The latter is a great idea. The former is not really a legitimate choice.

I'd like to piggyback off this post. Like the OP, I will be using the same 436hp for my car. I've had a trunk lip mount before and used it with a pro 106, with the older pulse larsen tri band mobile whip. There was a bnc adapter for it. I no longer have this setup and it's been a few years. I just recently bought on Amazon a nmo trunk lip mount and purchased the newer pulse larsen tri band with the spring to compliment the lip mount with cable. Ideally, I want a premium setup trunk lip style. As of right now, I just have the cheap scanner mobile mag mount set up at the moment.
