So Im assuming that all the units that sound really clear and do not have the distinct repeater hang time sound, have switched to the opensky system?

Last I heard

As of last Friday, Techs at Harris are saying "no way they will have all the radios in place before the end of the month (December 31, 2010) It's looking closer to the end of Jan. 2011... "
Along with "working out the bugs.... finish the installs.... working on the dead-spots...." its looking end of March or early April before we see the system fully operational.

During a NASCAR event on the strip last Thursday, most of the communication was done on traffic VHF simplex channel. It started off on OpenSky then quickly switched to Simplex after many motorcade units could not communicate including air-units hovering above.

The VHF patch will continue to at least end Jan or mid Feb 2011.

Hopefully that date will be delayed even longer.

Here is a little irony for you. Our now soon to be Secret Police at one time broadcast there own traffic on their own website! I guess it wasn't that important to have a private network back then.

A little blast from the past: Live Police Scanner

Oh well, I guess that's secrecy...er I mean progress for you!

Wow that truly is a blast from the past! I remember listening to it all the time, them taking it off is the reason I bought my first scanner.

Yes and as I remember, having had a scanner at the time, the feed wasn't even delayed!

Kind of sad to see it all go away and even sadder to see it go with such a clunky (I'm being nice here) system. :(

Same here, but since opensky is such a "clunky system" I dont see it going fully operational any time soon let alone keeping it fully operational. After all it was supposed to be fully up February of this year as I remember it.

Listening last night, system doesn't seem to be getting any better. Around 6:00pm on Enterprise dispatcher advised she would be unable to hear any units because of more radio problems. Also around 8:30am yesterday on Convention Center all radios sounded like they were being covered. Doesn't look like the system will be fully operational anytime soon. Just an update.......

I spoke with a motor officer yesterday, and asked about the new radios. No motors have the new radio's yet and when they were testing them on the motors, no one could communicate with the dispatchers. What's going to happen when Metro signs off on this system and then officers get hurt because the new radio's don't work. Isn't this leaving Metro and Harris on the wrong end of a law suite?? I know I wouldn't think twice about legal action should I get hurt.

That's pretty much what happened during a NASCAR event on the strip a few weeks ago. Most / all of the communication was done on traffic VHF simplex channel. It started off on OpenSky then quickly switched to VHF Simplex after many motorcade "motor" units could not communicate including air-units hovering above.

What I find interesting are that a lot of these agencies that cried about the analog system being "old and outdated" are depending on those systems for backup.

Soon, many will face either narrowbanding their backup or depend entirely on their "new and updated" system, which is the whole idea in the first place.

To answer your question, no. Harris will have hired the best legal minds money can buy, and there is probably a clause in the contract that limits their liability should someone get hurt in the event of a radio malfunction.
