The sheriff's dept has several problems with the cleartalk system. They have a running list of blindspots that the radio disp take the info of where the car is etc and time and the list is supposed to go to the sheriff(Tom) to have checked. Tom is a HUGE supporter of the new starcom system. They have been doing site tests all over the multi county area since June 1 and continue as we speak. When Moto gets the system up , La Salle county will be on it in a heart beat.
While Tom is supporting the system to all the other towns in La Salle cnty , most can not afford the costs involved. Even with Homeland grants etc there is still the concideration of how long they must stay onboard , maint must be with Moto , all future purchases are thru Moto etc. If for some reason a city is unhappy with the system They will be locked into it for I believe for 10 years. Moto has been very aggressive lately about ALL its contracts and sales agreements. This could mean large legal bills for a small town to fight the mighty MOTO. Moto has had troubles in the past in the area. The Grundy county system that originally went in 10 years ago was a huge failure requiring Grundy to go back to its vhf. The new system was Moto ( supposedly thru Chris Galvins pressure) trying to save face and give Grundy what they had originally wanted. The fire depts in Grundy are still on vhf and I am not sure when or if they will go to the Moto trunk system.
Will county was sued by Moto when they decided to go to EDACS. Moto had a fit and wanted Will County to pay for all the expense it had incurred getting the bid , quote etc ready. They were so sure of the job that they were in SHOCK when they didn't get it and were very unprofessional about the whole mess. I believe they got 30 to 40 thousand from Will and that was it.
Anyway the star system may work well , it may not. For a city with limited money it is by all appearances a blessing , but it could also be a downfall if the system doesn't fullfill the needs of that small city , they will in fact be locked into the system and will have to live by Moto's rules until the time period is up.
I don't kmow how many of you have been following the ongoing battles that Moto has been having with its dealers and repair shops. There are many dealers being left by the wayside by MOTO and its causing alot of hard feelings among the shops. Many have totally left the Moto family for other eqpt manufacturers and have refused to pay the high cost of doing biz with Moto. The public can no longer call Moto and order a spare part for a radio. If I have a broken antenna on my mt 100 I have to go to a dealer and pay the price they want for it. I can't orderr it from Moto anymore. This applies to ALL the products. I needed a new cable for my gr300 rptr to go from the power supply to the radios. Moto wouldn't even talk to me. I went to a local MOTO dealer and they didn't want to bother. I was told I had to bring in the gr300 so their tech could evaluate the gr300 and install the new cable !Needless to say I didn't bother with them after that. While MOTO has a fine history of great products , alot is missing these days that made MOTO reliable and customer orientated in the past. Hopefully they will once again become the company they once were .
