Now,

At present, I don't have anything to monitor the LATIE network. Now, is it ALL digital or is it 700 mHz analog "Trunked"? There are a BUNCH of "configurations" APCO-25, StarNet, etc, out there. Are all these enities on the LATIE network, compatable?. I'm in the "dark" on this and I'm wondering if the expense is worth it. I don't want to find out after the purchase that it's all "encrypted" and nothing is readable. :-(

I "trust" the locals and even state but I don't trust ANY federal agency as far as I can toss them, LOL!

Respectfully,

The system is a P25 digital system, which means if you would like to monitor it, it you would have to purchase a scanner capable of receiving the 700 mhz band. The only Two (2) scanners that I know, capable of receiving the 700mhz P25 digital system, are the Uniden BCT396 D, and the Uniden BCT 996 D. You can find them on online , starting around $550.00

Add to that list the two GRE digital scanners:
PSR-500 (handheld)
PSR-600 (base/mobile)
Price from most online retailers is about $500.00. A few are offering free shipping. There is one that is offering a discount to RadioReference members.

The Radio Shack Pro-96/Pro-2096 will not trunktrack on the LATIE system. While they will track 800mhz P25 systems, they will not do so for systems, such as LATIE, utilizing frequencies in the 700mhz range. They can be 'opened up' via software to listen to the voice channels conventionally, but will not track talkgroups on the trunked system. Radio Shack is due to release a version of the GRE PSR-500, with the Radio Shack label on it, I believe, by November.

Don,

All of your questions above (with the exception of the scanner) are answered by looking at the RR Database. Each trunking system tells you what kind of system it is.

To all others:
I have seen this mentioned several times and would like to address this. The LATIE system is not just a 700 MHz system, it uses both 700 and 800 MHz frequencies, sometimes on the same site. Indeed the majority of the frequencies when this system started out (in Region 1) were 700 MHz, but as it expands, I think that you will see reallocation of the current (at least some) 800 MHz state system frequencies to the new system.

Good Morning from Caddo Parish...

Hi All,

Thanks for the information. There has been a multi-faceted discussion (somewhere, I don't remember) on the different types of trunking systems : APCO-25, StarNet, Open Sky, etc. From what I can gather, the discussion was about Ham radio and the use of D-Star. The "gentlemen" in this spirited discussion seemed to be IN the communications business OR had a vast knowledge of how the systems work.

Now, not being up on this, their technical explanations were confusing to me, obviously, and I was trying to equate how it worked on the LATIE network. A lot of the old, "39.5" LA. State Police - Mutual Aid stations have "disappeared" and gone to other frequencies or possibley cell' phone use. I would not THINK they would use the I-Net as too many folks might "trip-up" and find their comms, LOL!

Recently, I've discovered that some of the State Police 800 mHz stations (Plain Dealing, Mansfield, Bellevue) have "combined" and seem to be using the Shreveport frequencies. ??????? I no longer hear them on THEIR frequencies, but do thru the Shreveport repeater. Also, on occassion, I'll hear some "down South" units on Shreveport's system. Now, in times of emergency, the State has the ability to "open up" the whole system so that units can communicate better.

At the present time, I can't afford a APCO-25 digital scanner, but one day.....LOL!

Oh, on REAL GOOD "authority", I've learned that the Bossier Sheriff's office no longer (supposidly) uses any low-band vhf, hi-band vhf or low-band uhf frequencies to conduct any "business", they are all on the 800 mHz trunked system they have and only use the digital side to conduct drug bust or high crime investigations, the "normal" boring traffic (license checks, speeding, etc.) is done on analog. Since I never go out into their parish, I've removed them from my scanners.

Well, it's not raining heavily yet, but the wind has started to pick up and we're having some good gust every once-in-awhile. ;-). Wife's still asleep, so the ham rig is silent. Later, I'll be on the 146.67 (-) [K5SHV- Skywarn] repeater and their "link" across the State.

For you, down South, our prayers are with you, especially those along the LA/TX coast.

Respectfully,
73,

Don/KA5LQJ
