Lawrence, KS - Douglas County emergency dispatch needs $7 million in upgrades

As usual, the news articles are short on details.

I know that Douglas County had been considering piggybacking on the Johnson County 700 and also KSIC, but $7 million seems a bit low for that and too high for just narrow banding their VHF stuff. I would consider Douglas County to be comparable to Shawnee County- and they are talking $18 million to go to P-25.

The FCC narrowbanding mandate applies to VHF and UHF, not 800 MHz. 911 fees should not be used for administrative, roads, etc. It should be limited to 911 emergency calls only. Digital P.25 is not required by the FCC, but it may be desirable for "interoperability."
