I was reading a post about scanners in the UK. Do you have to have license to own a scanner or just to listen to certain freqs?

I'm a bit confused about how that works. Could someone explain?

Dublin man granted bail

A Dublin man facing a terrorist charge was freed on bail in the High Court in Belfast today.

But a judge ordered that £5,000 had to be lodged in court before Geoffrey Cooling could be released.

Cooling, 35, who is a claims investigator from Old Church Crescent, Dublin, was arrested in Armagh on April 7 after police found a radio frequency scanner in his car.

He was charged at Banbridge Magistrates Court with possessing a Uniden Bearcat hand-held scanning radio receiver contrary to the Terrorism Act 2000 and was remanded in custody.

At his bail application today, Crown lawyer David Hopley said police spotted two men talking to Cooling as he sat in his car at Moy Road, Armagh.

The men made off as police approached and when the car was searched the police found the scanner in the footwell.

Mr Hopley said the scanner was examined by a forensic scientist who reported that it was capable of scanning radio frequencies used by police, soldiers and
Ministry of Defence personnel.

He added that the scanner`s battery was flat but Cooling had the means to charge it in his car.

Lord Justice Sheil granted bail after being told that Cooling would reside near the border at Mullagh, Co Cavan, so that he could report twice a week to the PSNI.

Personal bail was set at £5,000 with two sureties of £5,000, one of which had to be a cash lodgement.

Briefly and simply:

It is legal to buy /own an unblocked scanner in the UK. No licence can be obtained for a scanner.

It is illegal to listen to any frequency for which you don't hold a licence except for things like broadcast radio. There are some specific laws on top of this with regard to intercepting telephone calls and the like.
Full details are on the ofcom website (http://www.ofcom.org.uk/)

I doubt that Seamusg = Seàmus Ó Gallchobhair ie, I want to keep my politics off this site but I do have an opinion about Ian f***g Paisley and the person he went to preacher school with. There are 26 counties in the Republic of Ireland and 6 in Northern Ireland(UK).

Well You had me at first! I had to make sure they didnt re-write any geography books while I slept. I read your post at 5:AM. Im not a very sharp at 5AM. Im lucky to pull anything out of my hat at 5 AM!!!

Im actually interested in both countries laws.. My mother and I are talking about going back to follow up on our family tree. My side of family hasnt been back since the late 1600's and we have family in both countries. To make a long story short I would love to bring either a small HAM radio, scanner or both. I'm also looking to apply for a HAM operators lic for both countries.

Anyway thanks for the info....

Should be no problem bringing either. Your US amateur licence should be valid in Eire and UK . It's normal practise to use the country prefix for the country you are operating in followed by your own callsign. AARL, RSGB and ofcom websites should have the info you need regarding operating here using your own licence. Be aware that the 2M amateur band is not the same here as in the USA
