Legality Issues with 2-way radios

Hi all,

I'm sort of new to radio communications in Australia. Does anyone know the legality issues regarding the use of 2-way radios in Australia? For example, can we dual FRS/GMRS walkies without a licence here? What are the non licence frequency range over here? I've tried looking this up on the ACA website, but I've been going in circles trying to find the info. I'm thinking of purchasing some Motorola or Cobra walkies. So if anyone can give me a full overview of this matter or point me to a website which explains the how it works in Australia, that would be great!

Do they sell those in Aus?
The package or the retailer would probably give you a good bit of information.



If you are thinking about ordering them from another market, I would avoid it. Often even if the services are similar, ther rules or the product certification processes may be different.

I did some searching around and found this link

Look under communications and choose Uniden . I think they call it UHF CB over there do they not?

Thanks for the info. Apparently they call it CB radios over here and they provice 40 free UHF channels.

I haven't seen any stores that sell Motorola's and Cobra's yet, but I know their FRS ranges lie withing the free licence frequencies.

I have a feeling that we would have to pay for GMRS licence if they do have that here. Will call up the ACA to find out more. I'll be heading down to some communication shops I found online today to check out what's available. Later...

IF you use radios that fall within the 40 channel UHF CB radio band, then you don't need a license, and you are restricted to a max power of 5 watts. You can run CTCSS and DCS, as well as other sub audible data.

Hi,
The best thing to do would be to get either a store bought CBRS radio from Dick Smith, etc. Uniden is a good brand. Or, get a Motorola, kenwood radio in the 450-520MHz range or the GE M-RK radios are in the 470-500MHz range. CBRS channels are 476-477 Mhz. The power limit is 5 watts. Most of the commerical radios out there are 4 watts so its perfect.
