Hi! I'm new to this forum. For some reason I cannot recieve our local police channel (155.64000) here in Lenoir N.C. anymore as of a week or so ago. Any ideas as to why? Thanks

Helped you out with the thread title so that it gets the attention of someone in your area...Marshall KE4ZNR

They have moved over to the statewide 800 MHz network joining Hudson PD, Granite Falls PD and Caldwell SO on VIPER.

Digital trunktracking scanner is now needed to listen to these agencies.

Thanks for the reply! I do not know all that much about scanners and nothing about Viper although I have used one for about 20 years. Is my Radio Shack Pro-2054 300 Channel now out -dated? Thanks again!

The last time I was down there they haven't went to the system but that was over a year ago. I can't wait till the next time I'm there to listen how it sounds on the new system. If you know a Jimmy B tell him I say hi.

The Pro-2054 is a good Conventional (ie non-trunking) scanner. However if you want to be able to monitor VIPER (and Lenior PD/Caldwell County in specific) you will need to procure a digital scanner. Check out the link to the Radioreference.com Wiki at the top of every page to read up on digital scanners.

I found a list of Viper channels at the bottom of this home page. I programmed my scanner with all the frequencies that apply to Caldwell County. Can anyone tell me the exact frequencies for Lenoir PD, and Sheriff? I have not found these yet when listening.

Scanner Frequencies: Voice Interoperability Plan for Emergency Responders (VIPER) Trunking System, Various, North Carolina
Listed in the link above

First you will not be able to hear anything but noise unless you have a digital decoded scanner for p25 traffic. The new system should run something like the Hickory Police did on the 800 band. For Lenoir it looks like you would program it as moto type 2 800 mhz system. The exact freq. will change from each time they talk by the system, again like the Hickory old 800 system. Taking a guess that this would hold most all Lenoir traffic on this tower
413 Caldwell County / Hibriten Mountain 866.17500 866.77500 867.07500 867.90000 868.32500c

They also might be using the tower with that one in Hickory as you get to Granit Falls area so if you are loosing them when the county are over there then you might have to program in those tower over in Catawba County.

Look on the link listed above and find Caldwell County, it will have all the TalkGoup numbers for the city and county in it.

I hope this helps,
Jeff

Also: It appears you have not had much experience with Trunked radio systems...it's ok, we all started somewhere :) Click on the "Wiki" link at the top of the page and read over the info about Motorola Trunked Systems....there is more to it than just programming frequencies...And other forum members are right: you will need a digital capable scanner (the Pro-2054 is NOT a digital capable scanner) before you will be able to monitor Caldwell County...
Hope this helps!

Thanks! You are right about experience..very limited and you have answered my question. The RadioShack Pro-2054 I bought in 2006 is useless now. That really hurts someone with limited funds!

One last thing for now. Could the Forum members please recommend a good basic base scanner (RadioShack/Bearcat) that will enable me to just listen to local fire police and shefiff? Money is an issue. Thanks...

If what you define as local is strictly Caldwell County, you will unfortunately be out of luck without the high dollar scanner.

Hold what you got and save up.

Unfortunuately, A Radio Shack digital base scanner or a GRE 600 base scanner will cost 500 bucks....Even the handheld pro 106 or GRE 500 will cost 500 bucks.. I'm not real familiar with the Uniden Bearcats but I think that are just as much if not more. Radio Shack in the past couple of months have had a sale on Radio Shack pro 107's for 299.00 but they go fast....Keep an eye open for them...

Something else to keep in mind:
You do have some options on the secondary market:
Pretty soon the Uniden BCD396xt will be released...which means the previous Uniden BCD396t will drop in price..already some people are selling their 396t's to finance one of the new XT's...the 396t will work fine on VIPER....also you will find Radio Shack Pro96 Handhelds and Pro2096 Mobiles at a decent price....just be aware once rebanding is done in NC the Uniden 396t will be able to easily have its firmware updated to handle the new frequency assignments whereas the Pro96/2096 will not be able to have its firmware updated to handle the new rebanded systems....there is talk of using custom tables to make the 96/2096 be able to handle this but there is no guarantee...
Expect anywhere from $300-400 for a used 396t and sometimes you can find 96's & 2096's for as low as $200.

I have saved these model numbers. I have looked everywhere, including Amazon, and the prices are, as you have said, around $550. At that price I will have to wait for prices to drop or a sale!

Cald Co. Sheriff Dept, Granite PD, Hudson PD, Rhodhiss PD are all on Hibriten Mountain with 4 frequencies and 1 control frequency.
