So a couple weeks ago I emailed a couple chiefs of the Lex Fire Dept asking for Station Location Information...no response...so a couple days ago I emailed the Chief of the FD asking for the same info....here is the response I received this AM:

Dear Mr. NCTM:

Thanks for your interest in our department and our apparatus. I am sorry, but we have made a few concessions to more security in these troubled times. We no longer give out uniforms or pieces of uniforms, fire station telephone numbers or locations (except as in the telephone book), radio frequencies or help in setting up scanners to track our transmissions, etc. Of course we understand that this seperates us from our public more, but it also makes it more difficult for folks who would use it to the public's hurt to get that kind of information. If you would like to visit a fire station, please call us at our administrative number (859) XXX-XXXX and we will see what can be arranged.

Sincerely yours,

XXXXXXXXXXXX
Administrative Officer
Division of Fire & Emergency Services
219 East Third Street
Lexington, KY 40508

Am I the only one that thinks this is a little extreme?
So I guess I need to call and set up a meeting so they will understand I am not a terrorist....or does anyone here have a list of Fire station locations?
Any help would be appreciated...

I would not call it a little extreme. You have to think of terrorist attacks nowadays. We only give our station locations to fellow firefighters, seems drastic but you must realize that we are possible targets also. Sorry.

Yes, I probably think it is a little extreme because if a terrorist really wanted to attack fire departments it wouldn't be extremely difficult to figure out where most of them are. If they really wanted to attack, keeping this information from them will not stop them.

I do understand the need to be careful and all...but where does the need for security stop? should all communications be encrypted to where no one in the public can listen at all? My tax dollars pay for the fire trucks/radios/fire stations...there is a very slippery slope here...freedom of info vs. security is a tricky issue...believe me avfd2922 I have no beef with you it is just a little frustrating...

Sounds like a chief that's a bit overzealous. He fails to realize that all of that information is public information and can be requested through the proper channels if a person so chooses.

I can understand the uniforms part.

But, the rest is public information and he may be opening himself up to trouble by denying access to that information.

Believe me I would never do anything that would put anyone in public safety in danger....hell, 2 of my best friends (and groomsmen at my wedding) are police officers....I also have family members that are firefighters....I am a fire apparatus buff not a terrorist...I have to understand and respect his (or his bosses) point of view no matter how close-minded it appears to me...

If you want a map of fire station locations in Lexington, then use the interactive GIS map provided on the Lexington government web site:
http://gisweb1.lfucg.com/maps/mia/viewer.htm

If you want exact addresses, then consult a local telephone book or map book as these usually contain that information in the government sections.

You can get firehouse location information if you do a little research. Why not ask one of your cop friends (who knows you) for such information? I have lived in Lexington for 20 years and know where most of the fire stations are located. I agree with our fire chief's response to you on this one. Security IS an important issue. And everyone is affected with the new security rules we all face. For example, I like to photograph trains and railroad activity. But now, this once "innocent" activity really sets off the warning bells with rail security people and the Feds....

Why? Railfans use scanners to track train traffic and the "once friendly" rail yards are now "off limits" to rail photographers as they think we might be feeding images to the enemy. I certainly don't like this situation, but I DO UNDERSTAND why the security is being beefed up! You can still enjoy scanning and other endeavors. You just have to be careful about how you go about it.

Eric-
Thanks for the ideas...the GIS gives me a starting point but does not include actual station numbers...
as far as the phone book...already tried that....there is only one main dept phone number listed...and being a map buff I have not found 1 lexington map yet that includes fire dept info...
but thanks for the ideas :D

I apologize...I should have been more clear....I have only lived in KY a little over a month...my cop friends live and work in North Carolina where I used to live...I don't think they would be able to help me out much with Lex info

I have been trying to research info for this area...there is just not alot of info online...and what is online is outdated...Just FYI: I am working on putting together a professional Central Kentucky Scanner Info website so that future scannerbuffs won't run into any more roadblocks in their quest for scanner info....I am also looking into setting up a central KY Scanner/Shortwave listeners group that would meet once a month somewhere in the Fayette Co area to discuss radio communications of all kinds...I am working hard to advance the radio monitoring hobby in Central KY...I want people to feel they are included no matter if they monitor HF/VHF/UHF/800Hz...let me know if any of you KY residents are interested in setting a date in January for the first meeting of KY radio Buffs and where you think would be a good meeting place....I will get the word out and there will be a meeting even if it is just me and my radios<grin> My email is MSherard@gmail.com ....

This map has the fire stations plotted by number and also lists the street addresses for each. You might as well save a copy in case they figure out that they have secret information posted on their web site.

wonder why Ladder 3 is at 10's house, Engine 3 at 1's house, and Ladder 5/Engine 2 are flipflopped.

Also wondering how a thread this old was brought back to life :)
If there have been any Fire station/apparatus updates please submit them to the database and we will make sure the correct info is updated!
Thanks!
