Why worry about it? The government certainly hasn't.

Go buy yourself a nice digital an sit an listen an keep things to yourself. You'll be fine. There's lot's of others out there that were in the same boat an kept paddling.

Chances are they won't sell you the digital scanner. The Canadian retailers seem more concerned about the IC act than IC does.... IMHO. But hey... it's their livelihood...... so they must do their best to conform to the regs.

I went thru the same thing about 2 weeks ago.

I ended up opting for a non-digital scanner and will write the basic amateur radio exam sometime in the ensuing months to enable me to qualify as being 'eligible' to purchase a digital receiver.

Good luck...... and let us know how it turns out for ya.

Just call Radio Shack and order one up at

1-800-THE-SHACK (1-800-843-7422)

Or try one of the dealers down in the States such as Scanners Unlimited

http://www.scannersunlimited.com/

They will be more than happy to take your order and ship you up a radio. As far as price goes by time you pay exchange, customs and GST you will still pay less than you would for a digital scanner up here in Canada.

Hopefully this isn't going to turn into a big debate again about digital license in Canada.

I had mine sent up from the states, and i think i paid about $70 in those post office fees. It was sendt via regular post. I know that UPS tends to really suck people dry when it ships things to Canada from the US. Brokerage fees are crazy.

Im not sure of other people's experiences...

try Radioworld.ca they seem to be best for stock of Uniden scanners in Canada. And they did not ask if I was a ham. I'am . Under the law its up to you to licence it .And not the store to enforce Canadian Law. Thats up to Idustry Canada, and other bodies of Canadian Goverment to enforce the laws of our land . Not retailers . Hope this helps .

I got mine from Radio World about a year ago, and they asked me if I had my First Aid and CPR, and said it is a requirement and you 'should' have it. I said I had both, but FA expired like 7 years ago.

I mentioned I was going to 'prob' get it updated soon... and they said ok... and sold me a 796D.

WTF?

Now you have to have first aid and CPR according to these guys?

It just keeps getting better every minute...

[Still waiting for someone to provide proof of a license, btw.]

UPS Brokerage Fees are ridiculous when ordering anything from the US, at least the 2 items I have ordered so far.

The first was 2 simple auto service manuals. The Brokerage Fee was around $45 CDN. The books were around $100 CDN total. Then add shipping, and might as well forget about using UPS and try to find something local or try another courier.

That depends on how you look at it and how badly you want the radio. No matter what you are going to pay for shipping and eventually if you ship by slow mail overland you will get a bill in a week or so for customs and GST fees in the mail. That will add up to about 80 bucks or so anyhow.

If you order up UPS overnight express Pay around $45 US shipping you will get the radio the next day at your door and sure you will have to pay close to a 100 for the brokerage and GST.

HOWEVER, You got your radio in 1 day and with pretty much stress and hassle free.

True, but it would be nice to be told about the brokerage fees beforehand. It would also be nice to have an idea how much those fees will be before ordering. Luckily when my books arrived I had some extra cash laying around. Even the UPS guy mentioned it seemed high.

The place I dealt with (Year One) told me a horror story of some guy who had no clue about these brokerage fees (much like me an 'ignorant' first time UPS orderer, and who was not informed about it beforehand), ordered thousands of dollars of large parts (fenders, doors, bumpers, etc.) and the fees were outrageous.

I myself prefer ordering from online sites that have multiple courier choices, and not just UPS.

You should buy my 796D :)

I am considering selling it. I paid $899 CDN though at Radio World about a year ago. I see it has dropped $100 since then.

It still might be cheaper to order from the US though, even with the extra fees.

Was actually looking at the RS 2096.It will be cheaper after all fees etc.Getting nervous though, just bought the Icom R75.I could end up single at this pace.

Decisions...argh..

Why you selling the 796?For the 2096?LOL!

I am considering selling it since I do not use it that often... and also need dollas to pay some bills. :(

If I sell it though, I would only lose money on it, and prob kick myself in the ass later.

I think I would have preferred the portable 296D though. Or the 2096.
