LifeLine Air Medical Transport Service Doubling Size

6/2/05

INDIANAPOLIS -- Today, Clarian Health Partners announced that its air medical transport service, LifeLine, is doubling its fleet of medical transport helicopters from two to four helicopters. LifeLine is the gold standard in air medical transport and has been providing quality care and service to the citizens of Indiana for more than 25 years.

The two new helicopters, both twin engine BK 117s, will be based in Terre Haute and Greensburg. The current helicopters are based at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and at Howard Regional Health System in Kokomo.

The helicopter base located at the Terre Haute airport will be operational on August 1, and the second base located at Decatur County Memorial Hospital in Greensburg, will be operational on September 1.

"With helicopters based at four locations around the state, we will be able to provide much quicker response times and transports, ultimately providing superior patient care to a larger number of people throughout Indiana," explains Daniel F. Evans, Jr., president and CEO, Clarian Health Partners.

On each air transport, the LifeLine team is comprised of a pilot, flight nurse or medic, along with a flight physician. It is the only air medical transport team in Indiana to have this type of medical expertise on each flight. LifeLine transports patients with traumatic, cardiac, neurological, medical or OB/GYN emergencies, and performs nearly 1,500 flights annually. LifeLine also specializes in ventricular assist device (VAD) transports, as well as neonatal transports capitalizing on the expertise of Riley Hospital for Children specialists.

LifeLine's helicopters routinely bring patients to tertiary care facilities across Indiana as well as to Methodist Hospital, one of only two Level I trauma centers in the state. Methodist is equipped with the physicians, staff, specialists and resources to treat the most serious of injuries. A Level I trauma center such as Methodist Hospital is crucial to the survival of patients, and by locating LifeLine helicopters across the state, patient access to Methodist will increase, having a tremendous impact on the lives of people in Indiana.

"LifeLine currently serves not only the Indianapolis population, but trauma victims and the critically ill throughout the state," said Geoffrey Billows, MD, medical director, LifeLine. "Patients who are injured near Indianapolis have an advantage because they do not have to travel as far to get the necessary comprehensive care that trauma centers like Methodist Hospital offer. By having LifeLine helicopters in all parts of the state, we will be able to provide this same access to more Indiana patients."

Evans added, "Patients and the communities throughout the state deserve access to the best and safest air medical transport teams, ones that are equipped with medical professionals and that understand the care that is necessary for their survival and well-being."

"After nearly 25 years and more than 26,000 accident-free flights, LifeLine has a proven track record of providing patient care second to none, and we want to ensure that people throughout Indiana are aware that LifeLine, a service truly committed to health care, is available to them and their families," Evans concluded.

LifeLine is retaining Omniflight Helicopters, Inc. to provide the helicopters, pilots and maintenance technicians. Omniflight Helicopters is one of the oldest and largest providers of air medical services in the United States. Their mission is to operate as a premier provider of air medical services to their customers and the entire medical community. Omniflight is committed to maintaining the highest standards in customer service and responsiveness; safety; maintenance of equipment; hiring, training, and retention of employees.

"We chose to retain Omniflight because of their excellence and experience in air medical transport," said Evans. "Commitment to patient care and to the safety of patients, staff and the community is our highest priority when selecting a vendor."

LifeLine was the first hospital-based helicopter program in Indiana and serves the entire state and parts of Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Illinois. LifeLine has been serving the citizens of Indiana and beyond for nearly 26 years and in July 2004 flew its 25,000th accident free patient transport. LifeLine is a recognized leader in air medical transport and in the last few years, a LifeLine pilot, mechanic, paramedic and communication specialist have all received national awards for excellence.

In addition to being a premier medical transport service, the LifeLine staff are actively involved in community activities, including training and education programs, and performing mock scenes for area high school students to prevent drinking and driving during prom and graduation season.
