What are those orange lights on top of some lamp posts ????

It indicates that there is a fire alarm pullbox on that corner.

Not the little dome lights, there atre other bigger orange lights nad they are on poles where there are no call boxes. For instance the pole on my corner has one but there is not a call box within 4 blocks from it

Are you talking about the light all the way at the top???

If so then yes it's a FDNY Firebox light. New and updated, in the photo you can also see the old one.

Well now you say that there is no firebox? Then you are one of the lucky spots that had the box removed. However the city still installed the new lights. Also in the photo you can see that the there is no longer a firebox at this location either.

There's still plenty of this old time holdover stuff going on in the FDNY.

Did you know that when you see a red bulb inside one those sidewalk bridges it denotes that the building's sprinkler and or standpipe is located there?

There's also plenty of holdovers from the bell system which was removed in the 70's. The 5 7 phone alarm, 11 bells at roll call etc.

If you set off an FDNY pullbox with these new lights equipped, what will these new lights do, flash strobe or something? You can't even see some of them, they're so dim.

No, it's to let you know that there is a fire alarm box at that location.....

But its so dim. The old orange lights are much more visible.

These new lights are useless. Besides there are no boxes at most locations, you cant see them. At night when you look up at them you get blinded by the street lights..
