Line in from scanner

When I use to plug my line in cable from my scanner in to my computer microphone jack, I would get a box that pops up to ask if it was a microphone, line in, or what ever else. Now I get nothing. Can someone tell me how to get the box to come back?

I am using a Dell Latitude D620 with Windows XP3.

You have to run the SigmaTel audio event monitor (sttray.exe)
