SQUARE ROOT OF 30,000 FT X 1.415 GIVES LINE OF SIGHT DISTANCE. Using 40,0' the MAXIMUM distance would be 290 miles. This will only give you an idea of the distance.

Ever heard an unknown A/C,but it was loud and clear?? A/C passes Altitude as 35,0. Us this fornula and it will give you an idea how far from you they are flying. I once monitored J-STARS at 40,0 over Ft. Campbell,KY.

... this is not always true... I have been at 28k and 120-130 miles out and had problems... I will also say that from air to air distances have been achieved well over 350 nautical miles
