I found this online tool to be utterly cool. It will tell you if you are "line of sight" between two points, and you can estimate what tower height you will need to overcome a problem.
It told me that moving a tower in my back yard from one corner of it to the other (I have a big yard) moves my line of sight in a preferred direction from 3/4 of a mile to about 20 miles.
