Linked Repeaters

Can someone educate me as to how a linked repeater system works, and how it benefits me as a licensed
amateur? I can guess at the answer, but don't really know!

It is done to expand coverage to a larger area than one repeater can cover.
There are several ways repeaters can be linked.
