Listening to NASA/Space Transmissions in Northern California

Excuse my ignorance,

is there any way to listen to ISS/Future Shuttle communications with NASA in northern california?

It's possible to get direct voice comms on the UHF. But you have to pay close attention to the position. Towards the end of the flight they will sometimes do ground checks with the designated bases they could possibly land at. They also use those briefly while launching, and landing. But you have to be fairly close to those spots... I would say within at least 100 miles of the flight path. I've heard of people catching comms on EVA... I personally never have, but once again, you would have to pay close attention to it's position.

If your talking about re-broadcasts of transmissions, try searching the amatuer 2 meter and 440 bands during shuttle missions. EVA and Air to Ground comms during takeoff and landing are on 259.7 and I think 296.8. As the previous person said, you have to be within range. I think it's possible to hear farther than 100 miles though

I've caught ISS (and MIR when it was still up) on 143.625 FM. I think that's a downlink/uplink for the Russian Comm center. It has to be overhead though.
