"Are you an amateur radio operator? Do you enjoy outdoor recreation?"

Do you enjoy being a pack mule to drag radio stuff to a remote site? Do you enjoy sunburn and wasp stings?

I always cringe when I see the "outdoor recreation" blather. It should just say, "willing to sleep in a tent during atrocious weather events."

Actually, sleeping in a tent would have been a step up from sleeping in the truck during some of the stuff I did.

On the other hand, waking up to a beautiful sunrise at some remote mountain top radio site is one of the fringe benefits I enjoy. At least it gets me out of the office and gives me free, unrestricted access to encrypted radio traffic. I've lured a few of our IT guys out there to see what the outside of a cubicle looks like.

Yes, the beautiful sunrise is a harbinger that the end of p]lllttbbddffskrrrrkkkqng is near!

The outdoors are incredibly wonderful at times. Unfortunately, those aren't usually the times us on-call types get to enjoy much.

Yeah, that's true. But one good day makes up for a lot of bad ones.

Plus, any day out of the office is a good day. I'll take windshield time over screen time, any day.
