Hey everyone,
I have been interested in scanning for a while, and I'm looking to upgrade from a cheap non trunking handheld to a trunking handheld, im looking at the pro-97 from radio shack. Will this pick up the LRPD? or are they encrypted?

I also would be looking for an antenna. Id assume that the antenna would help reception distance. Does it need to be mounted on the roof or in the attic? or could it be placed outside of a 2nd story window? or in a 2nd floor storage room? Any advice would be appreciated.

The Pro-97 is an excellent choice for monitoring the LR, PuCo, NLR, etc., etc. system. The only trunked system in central AR that it won't allow you to monitor are the Conway system and the LRAFB system, but only because they are encrypted. It will track those systems as well when their transmissions aren't encrypted. The LR/NLR/PuCo system is not encrypted generally.

In addition, the Pro-97 is also an excellent scanner for all of the other non-trunked radio systems.

It will not decode the statewide AWIN system, because it is digital.

The rule for any vhf/uhf frequencies is the higher you can mount an external antenna, the better. It also needs to be as clear as it can be from any nearby metal buildings or powerlines.

Steve

Sporter is correct as far as I know except he failed to say to consider the Pro 96 as it will do all he says plus the State Police that is on AWIN. Good luck with the scanning hobby.
