I really enjoy my scanner. I've only had it a couple of months however strongly advise it to others. It is so much fun to hear something as it is called into 911. Then dispatched to police, and rescue, then hear from the ambulance calling in stats and condition of victims.
I've already had police chases right down the street I got to run out and watch. I have found many accidents on roads that get shut down. Then 30 minutes later the news breaks in with the stuff I already know.
I also got into Ham radio now as well. So I guess I am becoming a geek so ill soon be working with police on Citizen Emergency teams. That will be fun to get to know the police that I listen to.

There are two problems with that.
1. The cops don't like it.
2. You might run into more than you bargained for - like a shoot-out.

I agree! Although scanners are fun to listen to, keep yourself safe. If a call even comes out about something that has happened in my area, I will stay in the house, lock ALL doors (if applicable), and stay inside!!!

Yea DO NOT go and see what you are hearing on your scanner. 1st responders have enough to deal with. Just sit back and enjoy what you get to listen to.

Been on both the buff and responder side of many things over the years and I have to echo the concerns of the other commenters. These days I use my scanner to find the areas to stay away from or to get out of harm's way if that particular area becomes near where I am at.

I frankly do not believe you guys wouldn't poke your heads out the door if you knew a chase was driving past your home. Draw the blinds, cut the lights and hunker down in the basement? I'll watch the action, thanks, and I know I'm not the only one.

Yea I would watch too, but I would not 'run out on my front lawn' to see them come by.

Assuming you mean Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) you'll do more than work with police, more often disaster response and assistance. You'll be properly trained as untrained "whackers" responding with lights and radios are a first responder's worst nightmare.

By all means if there's police action anywhere near you STAY INDOORS AND BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES! Anything can happen putting you in grave danger including a fleeing suspect seeking refuge in your home, lock all doors and windows, stay out of sight and whatever you do NEVER open the door for anyone unless they clearly announce they are the police.

That reminds me of something I heard a Black comedian say as part of his act. When there are gunshots White people are crazy, they run to the sound to see what happened. Black people run the OTHER way! Funny but true and something tells me you're not Black.

I am (LOL)!!! But seriously, when a call is dispatched over the scanner, be very careful. Here in Beaumont, if someone is hurt where a disturbance (where weapons are involved) takes place and EMS has to be called out, they (EMS) WILL NOT render aid until PD clears the scene of the suspect.

You've probably not been shot at.

In my day, 30 years ago, we didn't have this staging stuff. If we did, instead of doing 14 jobs in an 8 hr shift, we'd probably be waiting for PD long enough to only do maybe 2, with one being a cancellation. We were lucky we got what was wrong over the radio - and most of the time that info was wrong (i.e., call for a cardiac only to find out it's someone who needs a ride to the clinic). We had to be careful and street smart (hence my "if it's happening THERE, that's where I'm NOT" attitude... it works.). I read an article just today that EMS workers are getting assaulted on my former job now more than ever.

(Guess I'm an honorary black guy - anyway, I got treated a whole lot nicer by the brothers who knew my partner and I were there to help than some other folks who thought we were their hired help :lol:, and there are knuckleheads in every neighborhood regardless of black or white or whatever else.) Not too long ago, I heard a paramedic over the scanner sounding a little upset when he had to wait for an officer. PD Dispatch advises that they didn't have any officers available...

What I meant was not the RP calling into 911. The dispatch right after. I just sent in my ARES application and going to take the CERT and Skywarn classes to join them. I agree that you should never get involved without knowing when and what will help or hurt police or safety officials.

I am a first responder and you must stay away from calls/chasing us on calls too. You can get in severe hot water for "ambulance chasing". F.Y.I.

For the chasers you gotta understand if your chasing us and you get in a serious wreck that means we have to take valuable help from one scene to deal with you. I will say i have done it but i wouldnt fly if it was a large brush fire and i wanted to see it i would wait 10-15 min just to ride by and see the fire but again i wouldnt "chase" anyone up there.

That's what I have done on a number of occasions if I'm out and about with a scanner in my car. I'll wait a bit and then drive past, "straining" to see what's going on just like all the other motorists are doing. But I would never attempt to beat first responders to the scene. I'm not trained to do their job so I'd probably be more of a hassle than a help. I have too much respect for what they have to do to ever get in their way.
